Weekly Notes for Week 29
-
Topics of week 29: pattern formation by local dynamics. We use Turing and Gray-Scott patterns as motivation and then move on to Taylor expansion, the nabla operator, and local grid updates.

The supplemental slides on Turing patterns and animal coats are available here: Slides

Interactive demo on pattern formation: Pattern formation as local dynamics
-
Note on the demo: The Gray-Scott simulation is a local grid model with real-valued states. It is close to a cellular automaton in spirit and useful for illustration, but it is not a classical finite-state cellular automaton.
-
The script chapter on reaction-diffusion systems contains the formal derivation from Taylor expansion, the nabla operator, and local grid updates.
